Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Supported GL.iNet repeater firmware and a hotspot you are authorized to use.

Checked: 2026-11-01 · Risk: caution · Status: source-grounded editorial draft; not hands-on tested.

Version gate: Login-mode automation is documented for 4.6+; exact product support applies.

Before you begin

Obtain the venue’s permission and login terms. Portal authentication can require temporary direct traffic; do not do sensitive work during that interval.

Procedure

  1. Connect your device to the travel router’s local Wi-Fi and open its actual admin address; the documented default is 192.168.8.1.
  2. Use Repeater to join the authorized upstream SSID.
  3. On supported firmware, review Auto Enable Login Mode for Public Hotspots. It can temporarily alter DNS and suspend interfering services.
  4. Complete the genuine venue portal. Do not clone someone else’s identity or bypass a paid access requirement.
  5. Restore your VPN, DNS and filtering policy, then retest the tunnel and kill switch.

Verify the result

Confirm ordinary upstream connectivity first, then VPN connectivity and blocked-traffic behavior separately.

Undo or recover

Disconnect the repeater connection and restore your prior saved settings. Do not leave relaxed security settings enabled after checkout.

Stop and escalate

Use venue support when the portal refuses the permitted device arrangement; repeated resets are not a policy workaround.

The steps above combine paraphrased official instructions with an original safety and test workflow. They are not a verbatim manual, a guaranteed fix, or evidence of a common hardware defect.
