RouterOS Safe Mode; commands requiring a reboot are outside its protection.
Check the exact device
Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.
Applies to: RouterOS Safe Mode; commands requiring a reboot are outside its protection.
Before you begin
Keep a local recovery path and a private backup. Safe Mode is a temporary change-history safety mechanism, not a substitute for either. Coordinate with other administrators because changes from other sessions can be included.
Procedure
- In WinBox, use Safe Mode; in the CLI, press F4 or Ctrl-X. Confirm that the prompt indicates
. - Make a small, reversible change. Check management access and the intended network behavior before continuing.
- To accept a successful change, release Safe Mode with Ctrl-X. To abandon its changes in the CLI, use Ctrl-D. /quit is not equivalent to that undo action.
- An abnormal loss of the owning session triggers rollback after the connection timeout, not necessarily immediately.
Limits and verification
The documented history holds 100 actions; exceeding the limit can end Safe Mode without the expected rollback protection. Use small batches. Reset/restore operations requiring a reboot are not covered. After accepting or reverting, inspect the actual configuration and reconnect from a second authorized session. Never use Safe Mode as permission to test a destructive remote reset.
