Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Alta Labs S8-PoE 8-port switch, not a Wi-Fi AP or router.

Official evidence: Alta Labs S8-PoE.

Before you begin

  • List AP wattage requirements and IEEE 802.3af/at support.
  • Confirm the switch's 60W overall PoE budget and which four of the eight ports supply power.

What to check / do

  1. The S8-PoE has eight 1GbE data ports; only four are powered outputs.
  2. A per-port 30W 802.3at maximum is not a 120W total capacity. Use the 60W shared limit for simultaneous loads.
  3. Sum each downstream AP's required watts. A design with three 25W devices exceeds 60W even if no port exceeds 30W.
  4. Use a real router/gateway upstream; the S8-PoE is Layer 2 switching equipment, not a modem or NAT router.

Verify the result

  • Powered clients stay online without budget alarms or repeated reboots.
  • DHCP is still provided by the upstream router, not assumed from switch.

If the result is not what you expected

  • Stop changing settings if you cannot identify the model or a reliable administrator recovery path.
  • Use the exact manufacturer support link below and quote your hardware label, firmware version, and what changed.

Restore / undo

Disconnect excess load and restore previous cabling to the upstream router/switch.

Evidence, limits and editorial disclosure
