Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Models with supported multi-WAN firmware in standalone management; not the controller UI.

Choose the intended behavior

The official transmission guide separates load balancing, application-optimized routing, link backup and online detection. Link backup selects a backup WAN after the configured failure condition; it is not evidence that two subscriptions become one faster single connection.

Setup checks

  1. Confirm the model's configurable WAN ports and test each service independently. For USB backup, use a supported cellular modem rather than assuming every phone works.
  2. In the documented standalone UI, inspect Transmission > Load Balancing, including Basic Settings, Link Backup and Online Detection.
  3. Choose the intended primary/backup interfaces and trigger mode. Review the detection method; an Ethernet link light alone does not verify internet reachability.
  4. Record the initial configuration. In a planned interruption, remove only the primary Ethernet uplink and test a new connection over the backup.

Verify / undo

Confirm WAN status and then restore the primary link. Test both failure and recovery. Existing calls or tunnels may need to reconnect; that is an operational test requirement, not a seamless-handover promise. Restore the recorded backup/detection settings if results are unstable. Do not unplug optical fiber to simulate failure.

Official evidence

Editorial boundary: No hands-on testing was performed. Confirm the device label, current firmware and live official instructions before making changes. Never send passwords, VPN keys or complete configuration backups to RouterFix.
