Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Supported UniFi APs managed by an appropriate UniFi Network version.

Checked: 2026-11-01 · Risk: caution · Status: source-grounded editorial draft; not hands-on tested.

Before you begin

Provide a router/DHCP service and compatible PoE. A UniFi AP by itself is not the gateway or a complete controller appliance.

Procedure

  1. Bring the intended wired parent AP online and verify its Ethernet path.
  2. Enable Wireless Meshing under the relevant Wi-Fi settings.
  3. On a wirelessly uplinked AP, enable Mesh Connect under its device settings.
  4. Enable Mesh Parent on the intended upstream AP where the interface exposes that option.
  5. Do not enable Mesh Connect on an AP already using wired uplink. Review the topology after each change.

Verify the result

The controller shows the intended parent/uplink and clients can reach their permitted LAN and internet services.

Undo or recover

Restore the prior meshing settings and any temporarily removed Ethernet path, avoiding a parallel loop.

Stop and escalate

Stop if the wired network becomes unstable or the AP loses power. Review the AP’s PoE requirement and controller/firmware compatibility.

Evidence and interpretation limits

The vendor recommends avoiding more than two wireless mesh hops. That is a design guideline, not a throughput guarantee.

The steps above combine paraphrased official instructions with an original safety and test workflow. They are not a verbatim manual, a guaranteed fix, or evidence of a common hardware defect.
