Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Models explicitly covered by the NETGEAR sync article; not automatically every newer Orbi generation.

Checked: 2026-11-01 · Risk: caution · Status: source-grounded editorial draft; not hands-on tested.

Before you begin

Confirm the exact router and satellite pair. A retail RBK/RBE kit label is not the same as a router or satellite hardware identifier.

Procedure

  1. Power both units and place the satellite near the router for pairing.
  2. Use the router Sync control, then the satellite Sync control within the documented two-minute window.
  3. Wait for the model-specific synchronization indication. Do not interpret a power LED as a satellite ring light.
  4. For the covered ring-LED family, blue indicates a good link, amber a weaker link and magenta a failed/unusable connection.
  5. Relocate only after pairing, then verify the satellite again.

Verify the result

The satellite appears online in the management interface and a nearby client works through it.

Undo or recover

Return the satellite to the previous working location; remove only the newly added unit if it is unsupported.

Stop and escalate

Do not force a cross-series pairing or reset the main router to compensate for an unverified satellite model.

Evidence and interpretation limits

NETGEAR lists exceptions, including different LED behavior for some models. The general chart is a family reference, not a universal light decoder.

The steps above combine paraphrased official instructions with an original safety and test workflow. They are not a verbatim manual, a guaranteed fix, or evidence of a common hardware defect.
