Check the exact device
Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.
Applies to: Deco family with Ethernet; exact unit/revision must match its manual.
Checked: 2026-11-01 · Risk: caution · Status: source-grounded editorial draft; not hands-on tested.
Before you begin
Confirm Router versus Access Point mode in the Deco app. Save the current wiring. Do not interrupt active firmware updates.
Procedure
- Add the Deco units to one network through the app before connecting the backhaul cable.
- In Router mode, connect secondary units downstream of the main Deco’s LAN, directly or through a switch.
- In AP mode, follow the vendor’s AP-mode topology; upstream-router connections can be permitted.
- Connect a single intended path. Ethernet backhaul is selected automatically when detected.
- Open the network map and inspect the satellite’s connection type. If it remains wireless, test another cable/port and bypass the switch temporarily.
Verify the result
The app reports Ethernet for the target node and a client attached to it can reach the internet. Repeat after a normal restart.
Undo or recover
Remove the newly added Ethernet path to allow supported wireless backhaul to return; restore the saved wiring.
Stop and escalate
Stop if a switch or gateway loses connectivity after adding a second path. Do not globally disable loop protection as a first fix.
Evidence and interpretation limits
A port assigned to IPTV or switch behavior can affect backhaul. “Same brand” does not prove a valid topology.
The steps above combine paraphrased official instructions with an original safety and test workflow. They are not a verbatim manual, a guaranteed fix, or evidence of a common hardware defect.

If the switch path is the problem
Connect the Decos directly with a known-good cable first. If that works but the path through your switch fails, TP-Link lists TL-SG108 among its tested backhaul switches. Confirm your Deco mode and wiring before comparing switch listings.
