Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Supported Xfinity gateway, existing working account and one downstream router.

Checked: 2026-11-01 · Risk: high-impact · Status: source-grounded editorial draft; not hands-on tested.

Before you begin

Keep Ethernet access and a configured personal router ready. Private gateway Wi-Fi and routing will stop; check extender/security/service dependencies first.

Procedure

  1. If required for your gateway, enable access to the Gateway Admin Tool through the Xfinity app.
  2. Connect locally and open 10.0.0.1. Use the owner’s current credentials; do not assume a universal password.
  3. Open Gateway > At a Glance and enable Bridge Mode.
  4. Connect the one downstream router and let the gateway finish applying/restarting.
  5. Move household clients to the intended personal-router network and verify its WAN.

Verify the result

Test wired and wireless internet through the personal router, then verify any voice/TV dependencies separately.

Undo or recover

Reconnect locally by Ethernet and disable Bridge Mode using the official recovery instructions; restore the previous wiring.

Stop and escalate

Contact Xfinity before changing services that depend on its gateway ecosystem.

Evidence and interpretation limits

Bridge mode does not automatically disable the separate public Xfinity hotspot. Do not claim that it does.

The steps above combine paraphrased official instructions with an original safety and test workflow. They are not a verbatim manual, a guaranteed fix, or evidence of a common hardware defect.
