MikroTik hAP ax2 and ax3: Passive PoE Voltage Is Not a Generic PoE+ Input

hAP ax² and hAP ax³ only; not hAP ax lite or every MikroTik product.

Check the exact device

Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: hAP ax² and hAP ax³ only; not hAP ax lite or every MikroTik product.

The model-specific constraint

Both inspected models specify 18–28 V passive PoE input and 12–28 V DC jack input. Their passive output is on ether1, with different stated current ceilings: 0.6 A for ax² and 0.625 A for ax³.

Safe selection

  1. Read the exact device label and injector output before attaching power. An injector described only as “PoE” is insufficient information.
  2. Do not substitute a 48-V passive injector or assume an 802.3af/at source is equivalent to the specified passive input.
  3. Check the downstream device's voltage, polarity/pin arrangement and required current before enabling passive output. A matching Ethernet plug proves none of these.
  4. Keep total adapter capacity and attached load within the manufacturer's limits; the output-current figure is not a universal power budget for any attached device.

Verify / undo

Initially test the router without downstream powered equipment. Add a verified load only after the power plan is checked. If labels conflict or cannot be read, stop and use the supplied/approved adapter instead of experimenting. Remove added loads before restoring the original power arrangement.

Official evidence

Editorial boundary: No hands-on testing was performed. Confirm the device label, current firmware and live official instructions before making changes. Never send passwords, VPN keys or complete configuration backups to RouterFix.
