Menu names and behavior can vary by US hardware revision and firmware. This guide was researched from official material, not tested on a physical router.

Applies to: Supported ASUS SDN/AiMesh router and compatible node firmware, with a managed switch.

Why ordinary backhaul wiring is not enough

The official example carries multiple SDN networks through the router–switch–node path. A link can be physically up while a secondary SSID's VLAN is missing from that path.

Read the example as a mapping

ASUS uses VLAN 52 for one network and 53 for another. Its example switch ports 4/5 carry tagged 52/53 with untagged VLAN 1; example access ports 1/2 are untagged 52/53. These are illustrative IDs and port numbers, not universal settings for your home.

Apply safely

  1. Record your actual SDN VLAN IDs, router uplink, node uplink and management/native network.
  2. Configure the corresponding uplinks to carry those tags end to end while preserving management access. Do not assign a client access profile to the node's uplink.
  3. Confirm that the node and current firmware support the specific SDN feature; wired AiMesh alone does not prove every VPN/guest feature is available.
  4. Test one client on each secondary SSID for DHCP, internet and intended local-access policy.

Verify / undo

If only a secondary network fails, compare the VLAN path before resetting the node. Restore the recorded switch profiles and SDN mapping on failure. Keep a wired management connection throughout.
